This year in place of our usual Choral Evensong we will be having three services of Sung Compline. This is an ancient Monastic service at the close of the day and was first introduced by St Benedict. It uses responses, Psalms, prayers and canticles to pray the ending of the day to commit ourselves to the protection of God through the night hours. In recent years there was been a movement for the reintroduction of sung Compline as offering a mystical and spiritual space for those who may find more spoken services difficult. This will be an experiment and I would be interested to hear people’s thoughts on it. If you have not experienced it before, do come and immerse yourselves in these ancient prayers.
