Palm Sunday Samba band procession

Church has samba band procession for Palm Sunday (13th April)

This Palm Sunday (13th April) a church in Cheltenham will be having a service with a difference as they follow a samba band through the streets of south Cheltenham.  Their vicar, Nick Davies, explains “When Jesus entered Jerusalem it was a time of celebration.  We want to rediscover that sense of noise and party with our samba band procession.”

Along the way they will be having some drama, as actors imagine what bystanders would have thought when they saw Jesus pass by.  Rev Davies, who is vicar of St Philip and St James Church off the Bath Road, says “I imagine that on that first Palm Sunday people would have wondered what all the fuss was about.  I guess that our neighbours may well be asking the same question and we hope they might join the party and find some answers.”

St Philip and St James Church have joined forces with Bethesda Methodist Church and the Ola samba band and hope that it will be a fun and noisy occasion. The procession will begin at 10.30 outside Faithfull House in Suffolk Square and wind its way down Suffolk Parade, Great Norwood Street and Painswick Road ending with a short service in St Philip and St James Church on Grafton Road.  “We have sent cards round the parish with details of the services, so I hope people won’t mind the noise too much.  I never like to think that people sleep through our services, this year I think I’ve cracked it.”
