St Philip and St James’s church, Grafton Road, Cheltenham, GL50 2DD

We are committed to strive to safeguard the integrity of Creation and to sustain and renew the life of the earth. To this end we signed up for the Eco Congregation project. This interdenominational programme helps churches address the needs of the environment and God’s Creation. It is a step by step programme covering every aspect of church life from worship to outreach and the complete journey will take us several years. We made a good start by moving our electricity supply to a supplier of renewable energy, saving over 21 tonnes of carbon emissions each year (at no extra cost) and addressed environmental issues in the area of worship, the activities of our children’s and youth groups as well as the personal lifestyle of our congregation. For this we were very pleased to be awarded an Eco Congregation Award.

In England and Wales Eco congregation has changed to become Eco Church which is an online survey with supporting resources to help us move our mission on the environment even further on. We have completed the survey and this has shown us the avenues for further development of our environmental activities. In particular the reordering of the church will make major improvement on our church’s impact on the environment.
